CILIC FIRST INTO ISTANBUL FINAL

Second seed Marin Cilic is the first through to the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open final as he ended Diego Schwartzman’s title defense hopes in straight-sets.

Following his 400th milestone match-win yesterday against Steve Darcis, world no. 8 and second seed Marin Cilic grabs another straight-sets victory as he knocked out the defending champion Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 7-6 to reach the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open final.

Giant Croat was off to a flying start into the match while closing out the first set 6-1 in 28 minutes. It was also one-way traffic earlier in the second set as 2014 US Open champion took a commanding 4-0 lead. At this moment, Istanbul Open fan favorite Schwartzman started a strong comeback.

Winning four games in a row to level at 4-4, Schwartzman got broken on tenth game but again managed to stay in the match breaking back before taking the set to a tie-break. Third seed Argentine missed three set points in the crucial tie-break – two at 6/4, one at 7/6 – as Cilic kept his nerves to seal the deal on his first match point for 9/7.

After 1 hour and 39 minutes, Cilic advanced into his first final of the year, 28th overall. 28-year-old will be bidding for his second clay-court title, after triumphing in Umag in 2012. Meanwhile this is the second loss in 12 matches in Istanbul for Schwartzman who falls to 0-11 against top 10 opponents.
